PSD writes the technical specification for the world’s largest utility Static VAr System July 2009
Over the next few months, the world’s largest utility SVS (Static VAr System) to date will be commissioned at Riyadh in Saudi Arabia. The 380kV SVS system has a dynamic rating of 800MVAr, and it comprises a large capacitive range for dynamic voltage support.
The Saudi Power Grid has a propensity for voltage support problems because of the large volume of air-conditioning (induction motor) load connected onto their system. The planned SVS system is required, during system disturbance conditions, to rapidly restore and control low voltages in order to prevent any induction motor stalling from occurring – an undesirable situation since it can precipitate a depressed voltage condition or even a collapse of system voltage.
In the year 2007, three large 110kV utility SVCs, each with a dynamic rating of 660MVAr, were also installed in Saudi Arabia. At the time, these were the largest installed SVCs in the world. PSD developed the technical specifications for both the 800MVAr SVS and 660MVAr SVC projects.
