Chris van DykChris van Dyk
Specialist Electrical Engineer
B.Eng (Electrical)

Chris is a Specialist Electrical Engineer and founder member of PSD, with over 12 years of professional experience and in-depth system knowledge. His proficiency lies in the field of electro-magnetic transient simulations and electrical network studies.
At PSD Chris performs power system and equipment studies related to reactive power compensation projects, high voltage power equipment design, SVCs, HVDC, shunt and series capacitor bank design. He utilises PSCAD/EMTDC, DigSilent and RTDS to conduct time domain systems studies, network impedance and harmonic integration studies. Chris also presents PSCAD training courses.
Some of the work Chris has been involved with includes HVDC, SVCs & series capacitor banks, power equipment design studies on SVC projects & 400 kV series compensation projects. He has undertaken studies on conducted compensation equipment design for shunt capacitor banks and filters, harmonic impact and network integration of large non-linear loads on Transmission systems, expert system simulation on RTDS – Real Time Digital Simulators. Chris also was involved in power equipment specifications and investigations into system and power equipment failures.
Prior to joining PSD, he worked for Eskom (Transmission) in the Substation Technology Department where his main focus was directed towards simulation and network studies related to SVCs and HVDC.
Chris holds a B. Eng (Electrical) degree from the University of Pretoria in South Africa.

Ruaan du ToitRuaan du Toit
Specialist Electrical Engineer
B.Eng (Electrical and Electronic)
Registered Professional Engineer (ECSA)
Member of the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers (SAIEE)

Ruaan has significant experience focused on all aspects of transmission systems. At PSD as a Specialist Consulting Engineer, Ruaan focuses on power system studies and analysis, using PSS/E and PSCAD, as well as the design, engineering and specification for reactive power compensation systems and power equipment.
Prior to joining PSD in 2004, Ruaan was at Eskom, first in a transmission planning role and then in the SVC area. As a Planner, Ruaan was involved in all aspects related to the planning of high voltage power systems, from both a technical and economic perspective. Key planning projects included the capacity expansion of Cape 400 kV and 765 kV transmission systems, the electrical infrastructure to supply large industrial consumer loads and feasibility studies into the transmission infrastructure needed for international interconnections into the Southern African Grid (Namibia, Angola, DRC, etc).
After leaving the planning environment, Ruaan was team leader of the SVC (Static VAr Compensator) Working Group, as well as SVC task team leader. In this role he was responsible for all matter related to the SVCs connected to the Eskom Main Grid.
Ruaan holds a B. Eng (Electrical and Electronic) from Rand Afrikaans University (RAU) in South Africa, and is a Registered Professional Engineer (ECSA) and a member of the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers (SAIEE).
